The Family Law Act 1975 is the main piece of legislation that sets out the principles relating to family law. The Act covers the process and rules to be followed when dealing with parenting and child arrangements and support, divorce, financial agreements, and property settlements. The Family Law Act 1975 applies to people who are ending their relationships, whether it be a marriage or de facto relationship. If there are children, the Act ensures the best arrangements are made in relation to the children including child support and any other arrangements necessary for the care of the children. Further, if there is property involved in the relationship that has ended, the Family Law Act 1975 assists in splitting the property between the parties in a just and equitable way.
